Math Intervention and DIBELS
I read an interesting article on math intervention and DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills). Teachers can utilize a handheld computer to administer a one-on-one assessment in Math as well as DIBELS with K-3 students, and then, the information can be transferred to a website and teachers can inform their instruction. Currently, we assess students on a hard copy and input the information to the website. This tool would be very beneficial, but as always the cost would be the issue.

Our elementary school (Hartley) uses Dibbels, and palm pilots were bought to help implement the program. I've spoken with our title teacher who has said the program has made a difference with identifiying students that are truly struggling. I think Title funds were used to purchase the software and palms. However, as a parent, I don't know if I am totally sold on the idea, my oldest son scores great on all standardized testing but struggles in the classroom with math. If students aren't with teachers who are trained to recognize problems wouldn't it be easy for these students to fall through the cracks (as a parent of one of these children, I say yes). Please remember this is a parent's comments, not an educators
ReplyDeleteI agree, I do not like testing the little ones, but because they are requiring us to do it, the software palms sure would make it easier!
